Learn the ancient art of starting a fire using flint and steel, as well as the technique of friction fire with a bow drill, we will use a selection of natural tinders just like our ancestors. This is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the gardens and work freely in a concertina sketchbook for 2 days. Treating the sketchbook as a place to play and experiment with mixed media, working directly in the garden, surrounded by colour, shape, texture, sounds and smells.
Using a selection of Willow you will weave a cone using a tabletop jig. Once complete, you can either create a handle for hanging or secure a wooden pole to allow you to push the finished cone into the ground so it is free-standing. The cone is then planted with a selection of succulents or seasonal plants provided.

Join seasoned gardener, ‘Jenny-The-Pro', from The Sussex Garden School, for a hands-on day of bulb discovery. Jenny will be at the beautiful Sussex Prairie Gardens, where she will start by talking you through a general explanation of bulbs and how to choose the best bulbs for your garden soil and source good value, healthy supplies.
Study the shapes, outlines and patterns of leaves and their markings to cut out and create appliquéd shapes, which we will combine together to make an unusual hand-embroidered piece on a felt background.
We will be exploring Tetra Pak intaglio printing by working into food packaging to create layers with a drypoint tool. This will introduce you to the idea of producing detailed lines and textures in the soft surface before running them through the press.
